In 1996, Guy and Judy Davis bought and rehabilitated their own vineyard in Russian River Valley comprised of 100-year-old Zinfandel vines. After salvaging a 3-acre block of the Zinfandel, the family re-planted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah on the remaining 11 acres. In 1997, they crushed their first vintage under the label “Davis Family Vineyards”. Today, they maintain their mantra that great wine is made in the vineyard, which Guy now tends to with the help of his two sons, Cole and Cooper. A truly authentic family winery, Guy Davis is not only farming, but handcrafting each wine with Cole and Cooper actively involved at his side.
Within the Russian River Valley there are many varied micro-climates, much like what has been recognized in Burgundy for centuries. Through their wines, the vineyards tell the story of terroir, an expression of the neighborhood. Soul Patch sits on an Eastern facing slope of Laguna Ridge, with the vine rows running from North to South. This offers grapes warmth from the gentle morning sun while being shielded from the harsh afternoon heat. The soil is Goldridge series, with very high amounts of volcanic ash. This adds a beautiful minerality to each vintage, one of the highlights of the amazing complexity from their estate vineyard. Only organic, earth friendly farming practices are used on their estate vineyard. The reasoning for this is simple; not only is this better for the planet and the consumer, but ultimately creates a more layered and complex wine. Using only native yeast for all-natural fermentations, Davis Family Vineyards strives to highlight the unique characteristics that make fruit from each vineyard, from each varied micro-climate, so very special and unique.
